I woke up one day and decided I needed a hobby. Phoned a friend and she thought up this ridiculous idea to create a fashion blog. I’ll never be bored again.

Birds Of A Feather...

Cute feather earrings I purchased at Mint Julep in Harvard Square.
Feather Earrings were all the rage this year but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get myself to wear the long tribal ones. I even purchased a pair that I eventually gave away. I realized that they just weren't for me...until I saw these bad boys! I picked them up on a recent trip to Harvard Square. Too cute to pass up!

Looks great against the wood.
Mint Julep also has them in a leopard print which are so much fun but I decided I could make more use out of this black pair. As grandiose as I'd normally like to be, this time I chose the simple route (well, simple for a feather earring). I can see myself wearing these long after the feather fad is over!
Trying on my new earrings at home.
I love them! I can dress them up or dress them down and they're age-appropriate (what a relief).

Just because it's "in" doesn't mean it'll suit you but don't fret... find an alternative and re-work the trend in a way that works for you! There's a lesson to be learned here: stay true to your style.

Hope everyone stayed dry this weekend! xo

Inspiration Board

Pics were all hand picked and edited by yours truly!
It's lots of fun to take clippings from some of my favorite editorial spreads and bring them to life in my own way. It really helps give me a sense of what I'm into for the season...or.... for the week. Who knows what'll inspire me tomorrow!?

Here's what I'm in love with right now:
1). Printed hot pants
2). Sexy cat eyes (get a good liquid liner ladies!!)
3). Long chains
4). Layers upon layers of big vintage jewelry
5). Big Hair (Tease, fluff, hair spray!!!)
6). Turbans
7). Large Prints
8). Loud headpieces
9). Polka-dot tights
10). Cross necklaces/earrings... doesn't it bring back memories of George Michael in the 90's? Love.

Take It From: Pete of Uncle Pete's

A hand-made, scrap metal wall piece designed by Pete.

I have finally ventured away from my usual stomping grounds on Newbury Street to visit one of Boston's most historic neighborhoods, Beacon Hill. I love it for its narrow, gas-lit streets, brick sidewalks and, of course, the cute shops. I hope to raise my 7 children here one day - that's not a joke. =)  Pete was so genius in his decision to open up shop here! It's such easy shopping sans the hustle and bustle of typical city life.
His store screams cool. Definitely man-friendly but has a handbag wall that would make any women googly eyed! Not to mention his taste in unique fashion for both sexes. At first glance, it's almost hard to believe that a man as mild mannered and simply dressed as Pete could be behind such praiseworthy merchandise. Despite his very reserved persona, Pete wasn't reluctant at all to comment on how he just may be as fashion-forward as most of his past girlfriends. According to him, he's even helped advise them on their wardrobe choices. Lucky gals!
""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
**No Pics Please! Sorry friends, Pete would like to remain a mystery. He's a behind the scenes kind-a guy. **

Gilda: I've seen you a few times before I knew you were a boutique owner, you seem like a jeans and T-shirt (cool T-shirt and nice jeans, of course) kind of guy. I was super surprised to learn that this was your profession? Is this a reaction  you've encountered a lot?

Pete: Yes, it is a normal reaction. People are surprised.

Enter Pete's World!

Gilda: What did you imagine you'd be doing now while you were studying at UMass?

Pete: When I was in school I thought I would be doing something with computers. Some kind of software engineer or something like that. This idea to become a boutique owner came from part time jobs  I had in college. I worked for French Connection, Banana Republic, Diesel, Riccardi, The Tannery...

Gilda: You chose a great location, Why Beacon Hill? Why not Newbury...or..?

Pete: Umm, Newbury Street has changed a lot. It's more like an open-air mall. There are a lot of corporate stores like, Diesel or Lucky Brand. So, it's like, for me with Beacon Hill...I wanted to find something that was a little off the beaten path just to stand out a little bit more than just any other shop that opens up on Newbury Street. Beacon Hill just fit. The neighborhood has been great for me. Charles Street isn't a bad street to come look at a store because there's a ton of things to do. This is just a natural fit.
All the good reads in the waiting area.
Gilda: Where does the name "Uncle Pete's" come from? Why Uncle? Why not...Daddy? (haha)

Pete: (ha) Because, um, my niece Sophie who just turned three is the first daughter of us siblings so I treat her like my own and she calls me Uncle Pete all the time, Like, "Uncle Pete, Uncle Pete". So, it was a fun way to name it after somebody but not name it "Sophies".

Gilda: How are the brands picked to be in Uncle Pete's and how exclusive can we expect them to be?

Pete: The brands are pretty exclusive. It's only like one or two stores in boston that carry them. It's either me or Barneys, or me and Riccardi, or just me. Vinna Cava is only sold here or at Barneys. Comme des Garcons is only me and Riccardi. I have relationships with some of the designers. I used to be the buyer at the Tannery for like six years so I built up a lot of friends in the industry so when I said I wanted to quit and move on they all said, "yea we'll go with you".
Comme des Garcons T-shirts
Gilda: Describe the Uncle Pete's person/client. When you dreamt up this place in your mind, who did you imagine would shop here?

Pete: I imagined, ...I don't want to seem specific because you'd hate to be specific but, umm, I imagined a young professional couple. That's my ideal customer. A guy and a girl. Maybe they're buying their first place. Their building their lives. Because for me, it's like, the clothes are uh, for people who have grown up a little more. Now, that's who I invisioned! I get a lot of young people who want to dress older and a lot of older people who want to dress younger.

Happy Socks. Makes your feet smile.
Gilda: Do boutique owners get first dibs on the merchandise that come in? How hard is it to keep your friends from hounding you for the new shipments?

Pete: Of course! ...But nothing in my own store fits me (lol). If I had a girlfriend, then yea, she would have everything. Yea, tell those Parish Waitresses! (haha) As far as my friends, they are very respectful. No one has ever come to me and asked me straight up. They know me from working around the industry for a long time. There's never been a problem.

Pete even sells these cute collectibles. They're hand made.

Gilda: Anything exclusive you'd like my readers to know about?

Pete: We plan a lot for the fall. A lot of events and trunk shows. Fall started shipping July 1st so for me it's kind of like, when it gets nicer, people are going out a lot more and we usually do those things more because people are buying a lot more. It's something to do indoors.

Edgy jewelry is a must!
Gilda: Can we expect to find all the much anticipated/expected seasonal trends here?

Pete: uhhh...You see, I don't like to really buy trends. I think if you have a store that lives by trends you will always be catching up. You can put all your money into a trend and that trend suddenly dies, you're screwed. So I don't buy trends. I buy things I like? Is that the right word?

Gilda: Well, what about for a women? How do you buy for her?

Pete: I just picture what I would want my girlfriend to dress like. (admits he had a better fashion sense than his last girlfriend and that she loved that she could Take It From Pete! Imagine that.)
Love that he has a thing for copper! And, how adorable are those polka-dot wallets! Yumm
Gilda: How often do you receive new items/shipments?

Pete: In the Fall it's almost every week. In the spring it slows down a bit. Spring is different in Boston. There aren't many deliveries in the Spring.

Gilda: I checked out the website (www.unclepetesshop.com). It's so unique. I love the clip of the women changing clothes in front of her mirror! After seeing that and visiting the store, I can tell that you really pay attention to detail. Are you the creative mastermind behind the marketing & aesthetic?

Pete: Yes, we had a party at Alibi - I don't do fashion shows - we took mug shots of my friends in the clothes and put them up and we called it Free Pete. That's our fashion show. We will hardly do a fashion show.

Gilda: I also read the fine print along the bottom of the website clip about the lumpy blue sweater being more than just a lumpy blue sweater. What is the message behind that excerpt? Did you come up with it?

Pete: Yea, it's awesome right? That is my favorite quote from my favorite movie, Devil Wears Prada. That quote just defines everything that people have to think about fashion. It's a great movie. Anne Hathaway basically gets a schpeel about how a color is not just a color.

Pete chose this shirt and pant combo for outfit #1
Gilda: Do you plan on expanding the website? Do you plan on opening up in another location?

Pete: Expanding would be down the road. I would go to the suburbs. I've learned a lot of People don't leave Newton to come into the city and shop. It's just like that here. I mean, I would never go to North End.
Love this piece. Wear it as a dress on nicer days & with tights or jeans on cooler days
Gilda: What is your personal fashion advice for all of the Fashionistas/Fashionistos out there?

Pete: I believe in comfort. You have to wear clothes that you are comfortable in. It has to fit. When you're comfortable your confident and when you're confident, whatever you put on looks great. A girl could have a white T-shirt on and some jeans but she's comfortable and looks good. Don't be afraid to get anything tailored. Especially for men and button down shirts. You're never going to find the perfect fit. You should buy the shirt and have the tailor take it in where ever they need to. Fifteen bucks and you can get a good tailor to alter it for you.

This dress is also a comfortable summer dress but the color is also perfect for the Fall!
QUOTE FROM PETE'S FAVORITE MOVIE: DEVIL WEARS PRADA...
Miranda Priestly: [Miranda and some assistants are deciding between two similar belts for an outfit. Andy sniggers because she thinks they look exactly the same] Something funny?
Andy Sachs: No. No, no. Nothing's... You know, it's just that both those belts look exactly the same to me. You know, I'm still learning about all this stuff and, uh...
Miranda Priestly: 'This... stuff'? Oh. Okay. I see. You think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select... I don't know... that lumpy blue sweater, for instance because you're trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don't know is that that sweater is not just blue, it's not turquoise. It's not lapis. It's actually cerulean. And you're also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves Saint Laurent... wasn't it who showed cerulean military jackets? I think we need a jacket here. And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers. And then it, uh, filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic Casual Corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and it's sort of comical how you think that you've made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you're wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room from a pile of stuff.

Play the Blues if it Makes You Happy...

Piano Factory, South End - Photo: Jesse Weiner
Every girl should own a dress they can twirl in! A dress that makes you feel pretty aaaand flirty.

Piano Factory, South End - Photo: Jesse Weiner
This dress is from Lipstick - a cute, start-up boutique that I absolutely adore. The dresses are all breezy and have a vintage feel. This look is a little old-fashioned with a modern touch. I'm big on that right now.  It feels like I'm playing dress up!

#Zoolanderface  (lol)

Because the dress is fairly long in length, I chose a shoe that flatters my legs. T-strap pumps scream sexy. It can can make all the difference. Takes your look from matronly to youthful. Shoes are by Sebastian. Bracelet from J. Crew.

Added a few more youthful details: bright nails and flashy clutch

It was fun to wear this dress. I felt elegant and young. Classic.

Happy Thursday!! xo

Take It From: Boston's new IT GIRL, Olivia Culpo

Olivia Culpo, actress/model
Isn't she Lovely? Isn't she wonderful? (Stevie Wonder insider) And at 18, she's already living a life many girls her age could only dream of: She models for Maggie Inc; Boston's leading model and talent agency, she landed the cover of Stuff @ Nite's "Flirt Issue", crushed the competition for a role in Mark Wahlberg's upcoming movie TED, and she's popping up in Ads all over your computer screens! You'd think she'd be walking around with a big head (her head's actually the perfect size..). Nope, not at all. And when I asked her how she would describe an IT GIRL, she answered, "someone that others can look up to, admire and confide in". Never mentioned looks or style. Beautiful and modest? Can't get much better than that!

Check out what else Olivia had to say as I followed her into French Connection, one of her go-to shops on Newbury Street.

Gilda: So you're originally from Cranston, Rhode Island, how did you decide you were going to pay a visit to Maggie Inc. here in Boston and become a model?

Olivia: I heard about it through various friends in Rhode Island that are also with Maggie Inc. and specifically Cory Martin. I modeled a little in Rhode Island and for Andrea Valentini which is a bag company - she actually makes really nice bags, you should check it out. I decided it was something I wanted to get into and I heard of Maggie and I met with them and the rest is history!

Gilda: Sometimes your modeling Ads pop up randomly while I'm browsing the web. Tell me about some of the cool jobs you've had so far.

Olivia: (giggles) Umm, cover of Stuff was really cool. Keurig coffee makers was funny being that I'm only 18 years old! I had to pretend that I was the wife of this 40 year old guy that I was modeling with in a kitchen....yea, so that was cool (haha). There was one of me on the couch holding coffee and one of me and my 'husband' making coffee together. It'll be out soon. Karmaloop is a big one. I was in the Boston Herald for Spring Fashion. I was also in Scene Magazine...and aside from that, I'm also doing a little acting.
Follow Olivia!  Photo: Me
Gilda: I've always wondered if models were able to keep some of the accessories or clothes from a shoot. Are there any sweet perks like that when you're on the cover of a cool magazine?

Olivia: Hmmm...you would think that you'd be able to keep a lot more than you do. I've gotten a few free things but for the most part, no. Retail is really stingy. I mean, I get a sweet discount but the people that are taking my pictures are working for people that are working for other people...and so on so they have no say on what I can keep. Hey, I get a discount!

Gilda: So you moved to Boston for school (shout out to Boston University), have you discovered any new stores that you love or gathered any fashion ideas/tips from Bostonians ....or is Boston just not any cooler than Rhode Island and you're tired of comparing (lol)?

Olivia: No, oh my God, it's soo much cooler here! Umm, people in Boston are a lot more cold but I would never say that out loud (haha). I guess it's because people from RI are all Christian, Italian and related to each other! Ok, so, my absolute favorite store in the world is Intermix but I can't afford anything in there! Lf I love but sometimes their stuff is overpriced but I love their half off sales though. Umm, Pinkyotto..love them.

Gilda: Who or what inspires your style? What do you look to for inspiration? (Magazines, online, Icon, family member...etc.)

Olivia: I really like,...have you ever been to Singer 22?  It's a website. A really cool website that categorizes celebrities so you can click on a celebrity and see what their look is and it's really interesting. I really like Kim Kardashian (Olivia later decided that she was more of an Olivia Palermo. I couldn't agree more). I mean, not really into her whole like lifestyle and I definitely don't have the ass but...yea, I like her style.
Olivia appreciates the darker tones.  Photo: Me
Gilda: Give us a virtual tour of your closet. What do we see and what should we expect?

Olivia: Okay, expect a lot of dark colors. Tons of boots...preferably over the knee. A lot of big sweaters, kind of like the LF flowy ones. I really like button ups and Oh, I'm obsessed with American Apparel. It's what I'm wearing right now...it's a leotard and people are always like, how do you pee in it but it's soo easy (haha). It's really comfortable and the back goes down really low which I love. I also love Pleasure Doing Business skirts. It's a cool brand. You HAVE to put that in your blog! (giggles) But yea, my closet is fairly neat. I try to keep my shoes organized. I have plastic little thingies for each shoe. This is my dorm closet, btw, but it's pretty much the same at home.
Olivia has great taste, eh?  Photo:
Gilda: What trends do you hope never fade?

Olivia: That's a good question. Probably the button up, blousy shirts. Definitely don't want to see the over-the-knee boots go! The new high-wasted trend...don't want that to go away.

Gilda: What personal fashion advice would you offer to all of the aspiring fashionistas out there?

Olivia: Get out of your comfort zone. Test out new colors, especially with lipstick, I looove Mac Morange right now. It's like coral-y, very orange-red. Definitely bold colors. Yellow, red...Love it!!
(Olivia's outfit: Black jacket - Michael Kors, American Apparel black leotard, boots from a boutique in Milan, black Cynthia Rowley bag, Alice & Olivia jeans, tan Leith sweater from Nordstroms)

Gilda: A little birdie told me you auditioned for a role in a movie with Mark Wahlberg. What did you have to do?

Olivia: I tried out for a karaoke scene, a waitress, a hooker (haha). For my hooker deal I wore a Pleasure Doing Business skirt, a loose cropped Patterson shirt that made me look bustful, and pumps (giggles). They made me talk with a Boston accent (she let me hear it...Pretty good for a Rhode Islander). So far, I've been called back twice. I really hope that everything works out. (since our meeting, Olivia has officially started rehearsing for a role in the movie, TED. Stay tuned!).

Gilda: Vintage or Modern?

Olivia: Modern.

Gilda: Wedge or Pump?

Olivia: PUMP!

Gilda: Fall-wear or Summer-wear?

Olivia: Summer.

Gilda: Vogue or Nylon?

Olivia: Vogue.

Gilda: Fashion Don't?

Olivia: I hate WHITE BOOTS!

Gilda: Fashion Do?

Olivia: Stick to clothing you feel comfortable in!

Dare 2 Jeffrey Campbell!!!

Hey guys! I'm super excited today!!! My "Supersonic Boomerang Wedge" came in (FedEx) yesterday and I wasn't able to get to them until really late...but when I did...we played all night.

The box they arrive in is so adorable! It's covered in quirky doodles and a giant crossword puzzle. How practical Mr. Campbell.
All J.C.'s should rest their soles on a satin pillow.

Look what J.C. can do! Multi-talented. What a gooood shoe.

Impressive.

Yes J.C. , you can stand on your own.

If only my sister knew that when she's fast asleep... J.C. comes out to play.

Can't wait to wear them for you! Happy Thursday!
